There are an estimated 40-60 million “core” Deaf in the world. Core Deaf are those whose primary and only language is sign language. For over 2,000 years, the Deaf have had limited, or no access to Biblical truth because the church has only used spoken or written languages to communicate God’s Word. Most Christian Deaf simply mirror what they see in the church, but rarely understand the significance of what they observe until it is explained to them in sign language, their “heart” language. Outside the U.S. and Western Europe it’s estimated that 96% of all Deaf are functionally non-literate. They do not – cannot read the Bible, other gospel literature, or captioned Christian videos.
