"Mind the Gap." No, the Musings of a Midwestern Monk has not sold out to corporate America (although I can be bought). This is the refrain that the Papua New Guinea Branch kept saying last night as they gave an update on the work that they are doing in PNG. The phrase is a common saying that one would hear at an English subway station warning people to not fall between the gap that exists between the subway car and the boarding station.
After each people group from PNG was named, the missionary who is working with that particular people group stood up and read the text in their people group's native tongue. The heart breaking thing is that the presenter then read off the names of several people groups only to hear silence. The presenter (Todd Owen) then stated that these groups who did not have a missionary reading their text represented a small portion of the people groups still in Papua New Guinea who do not have a single word of scripture written in their language. Todd then pleaded with us to "mind the gap." He urged us to keep looking and praying for people to raise us and fill in the gaps.
The PNG branch then stood around the room with their arms stretched out (with several gaps standing between them) trying to reach the hands of their co-workers to show us the numerous holes that still exist in bringing people the Word of God.
I was so enthralled by these words while backing out of the parking lot that I accidently ran my car into a light pole. Don't worry, the car is fine and the light pole says that he completely understood.
I know I will probably annoy some people with these continual dreams but my heart's desire is to fill those gaps with faithful servants who share God's vision of all people coming unto him.
If you think about it today, would you ask God to give us the finances and strength to make it down here so that we can fill these gaps. There is just too much as stake for us not to get cracking on this work.
